Mission and Vision Statements

Mission Statement
     The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is a comprehensive college offering baccalaureate and associate degrees in the arts and sciences and in selected professional fields. UPJ's mission is to offer an affordable, high-quality educational experience to students of strong intellectual potential.
     A rigorous curriculum supports this mission by guiding students in developing disciplined, informed thinking; communication skills; problem-solving skills; strategies for information access; respect for the views of others; and a lifetime love of learning. Central to its educational mission is an expert faculty committed to excellent teaching and sustained intellectual vitality. The college provides small to moderate-sized classes and opportunities for frequent interaction with faculty, individualized instruction, independent study, internships, and research.
     The college is committed to the well-being of its students. A strong system of support services and a dedicated, quality staff reflect this commitment. Opportunities exist for personal growth through student organization, athletics, cultural and social events, and an active campus life.
     UPJ's mission is strengthened by a strong and long-standing relationship with the community. The college offers a range of continuing education and community outreach programs. UPJ is a cultural center for the region, hosting a rich variety of theatrical and cultural events.

Vision Statement
     The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown will be an institution renowned for its educational and intellectual entrepreneurship. We will invest in innovation, foster experimentation in learning systems, and adopt the best.
     We will have a faculty and staff who set national standards for the undergraduate experience, blending a tradition of scholarship with creative teaching and sustaining an environment that supports personal growth, diversity, and tolerance.
     We will encourage faculty, staff, and student interaction with society, locally, and through broader-reaching intercultural programs. We will prepare our students for the world they will enter and foster in our students an enthusiasm and responsibility for pursuing lifelong learning.
     We will build new bridges to our community, reinforce those already existing, and publicly advance the aspirations, achievements, and image of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
